Introduction:

This Cycle of  International Colloquium Courses on Portuguese-language African Literature set out to present and re-think the literary systems of each African country, written in Portuguese, and has as its guiding principles:
- The critical presentation of each country’s literature, thus acknowledging an absolutely autonomous and peculiar literary, aesthetic and philosophical system, expressed in the Portuguese language;
- To set up a dialogue among the players in the aesthetic and critical production of those literatures: the writers, the national critics, Portuguese and non-Portuguese critics who work on those literatures. The aim is thus to facilitate an approach incorporating scientific excellence with regard to the different literary systems, their relation to society, the space and the time (colonial, post-independence and post-colonial). A final consideration will be directed towards the relations of each of these literatures with the history, politics, power and knowledge of their countries of origin and production.
The second edition of the Cycle will take place in 2008 and will focus on the literatures of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, and Sao Tome and Principe.
