Fiona Bakas


Biography

Fiona Eva Bakas is a critical tourism researcher with a PhD Tourism and Gender (2014) from Otago University, NZ and an MSc Ecotourism (2004) from Portsmouth University, UK. In 2017, Fiona took up the position of Post-doctoral researcher on CREATOUR, a project on creative tourism in rural areas and small cities. From 2015 until 2017, Fiona was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with an FCT scholarship from the Research Unit in Governance, Competitiveness and Pubic Policies (GOVCOPP), working in the Tourism Department, University of Aveiro. In 2014 - 2015 worked as a Research Fellow on an FCT project on Gender in Tourism Labour, investigating the role of gender equality in boosting innovative forms of economic growth in tourism. In recent years Fiona has published in a number of tourism, gender and entrepreneurship-related journals that are indexed in Scopus, most recently publishing in Annals of Tourism Research. Fiona has international teaching experience and has taught and tutored Research Methods, Tourism 101 and Sustainable Tourism at Otago University, NZ in 2011-2014; held doctoral-level seminars on critical knowledge production and empowering methodologies at Aveiro University, Portugal during 2015-2016; Tourism and Accessibility to undergraduates at Portucalense University, Porto in 2017. Fiona also takes an interest in tourism outside academic settings, and is an associate of the NGO 'Equality in Tourism'. Fiona also has strong event planning experience, having worked during 2005-2007 as project manager for a conference organizing company in Greece; being an active member of the INVTUR 2017 tourism conference organizing committee; organizing the INVTUR 2017 PhD Workshop; and helping organize the ATLAS PhD Workshop (Sept, 2017). Fiona is bilingual in English and Greek, speaks Portuguese and German to a good level. Fiona´s research interests are: creative and cultural tourism, qualitative methodologies, sustainability, handicrafts, entrepreneurship, gender, work, rural tourism, ecotourism, and feminist economics.
