Collaborating with the
National Agency ‘Ciência Viva’ (Live Science)

CES has collaborated with the National Agency ‘Ciência Viva’ (Live Science) with very successful results regarding the promotion of scientific culture among young audiences, attracting a larger number of secondary school students and attaining a broad involvement of the centre’s scientific community.

Since 2006, CES has hosted summer activities for secondary school students, within the national programme Science on Holidays (OCJF). This is conceived as to allow students being acquainted with the daily routines of scientific work. So far, the programmes have focused upon diverse topics, namely: science in parliament; diversity and discrimination in the University; Portuguese justice performance; the uses of image in social sciences; the digital gap; small arms and violence.

Other activities have been developed to celebrate the Science and Technology Week, which takes place annually in November. In 2007, CES hosted an event on Hip-hop and Art in the Peripheries, in Portugal and Brazil, in which several doctoral students participated. Given the success of this initiative, the project was continued throughout the school year 2007-08, concluding in a videoconference between the students and Brazilian rappers. We also highlight the hosting of a Citizens’Jury within the celebration of the Science and Technology Week in 2005.
