Regulations

Preamble

The Centre for Social Studies (CES) is a Centre of Excellence with status of Associate Laboratory of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, maintaining, statutorily and protocolary a close relationship with the University of Coimbra (UC). Vocated towards interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and having as main aim research within the extent of social sciences and humanities, but also covering, whenever appropriate, other scientific fields.  

In this context, and pursuing consolidation and internationalization of its structuring activities (research, advanced training, outreach activities and science communication) CES aims to stimulate post-doctoral studies and research.
CES’s affirmation while host institution for post-graduate studies, justifies the existence of specific regulations outlining the activities developed by post-doctoral researchers during their stay at CES.

Article 1st
Object

The present Regulations define the rights, obligations and terms of admission for doctorate researchers, foreign to CES and the UC, conducting a post-doctoral degree at CES.

Article 2nd
Definition

“Post-Doctoral studies and research” are considered as an individual research programme, lasting at least 6 months and at the most 72 months. 

Article 3rd  
Terms of admission

  1. The candidate for post-doctoral studies and research must hold a Doctoral Degree, or equivalent, regardless of nationality and number of years they hold they degree, not being able to have any employment relationship to CES or the UC.   
  2. The application to post-doctoral studies and research must be addressed to the CES Chair of the Scientific Board. The application may identify a preferential supervisor among the doctorate researchers of CES, or may indicate, if subscribed from the start by the researcher in charge, the CES doctorate that will assume the supervision in case of approval.  
  3. Application requirements contemplate the candidate’s  curriculum vitae, copy of certificate of award of PhD degree or equivalent , a structured working-plan with chronogram of the duration of the research to be developed and other elements considered relevant by the candidate (letters of recommendation, publications, etc).
  4. Acceptance of the application involves the integration of post-doctoral researcher, during the period of his/her stay, in one of CES’s research groups.
  5. After hearing the Executive Board, the conduction of the post-doctoral studies and research programme  is authorized by the CES Scientific Board
  6. The completion of a post-doctoral studies and research programme at CES does not imply any functional or employment relationship with the institution.
  7. The preceding paragraph does not prevent CES to act as the host institution for post-doctoral researchers that have a grantee contract or employment contract with the Foundation for Science and Technology or other agencies, national or international, that fund post-graduate research and training activities. 
  8. The post-doctoral researcher is subject to payment of registration fee to be determined annually by the CES Executive Board.
  9. Payment of the sum referred to in the preceding paragraph may be waived, wholly or partly, if requested by the post-doctorate’s supervisor to the CES Executive Board, if properly substantiated by reference to the provision of services relevant to CES. There may also give rise to partial or total reduction in cases where the grant’s or  postdoctoral contract’s funding agency transfers to CES funding, which explicitly benefit the Centre by acting  as the researcher’s host institution
  10.  In order to obtain a letter of acceptance, in the extent of application for a post-doctoral grant, candidates must submit their request at least one month from the date of submission of the application for grant.

Article 4th
Rights

  1. The researcher in post-doctorate is granted the right to use, on an equal footing with members of CES, the spaces of the Centre.
  2. CES will make available, in space reserved for the effect, according to the possibilities according to the possibilities found at each moment and as deemed urgent, a working space for the post-doctoral researchers it hosts.   
  3. After submission and approval of the final report referred to in paragraph 2 of Article 4, the  post-doctoral researcher  has the right to receive a certificate to be issued by CES, stating the nature and duration of the program , as well as the identification of the supervisor.
  4. Remaining 12 months or more, the post-doctoral researchers have a quarterly ceiling of 500 copies for free prints and photocopies.
  5. In the duration of the condition of post-doctoral student at CES, the latter shall retain the right to a 50% reduction to the exemption from registration payment at colloquiums, congresses and advanced training courses.
  6. The reduction referred to in the preceding paragraph shall be decided by the Organizing Committee or by the Coordinator of the event that must fix the number of post-doctorates to which applies the reduction or exemption. This reduction or exemption does not apply to summer courses (CES Summer School).
  7. In the acquisition of the Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais, CES post-doctoral researchers are eligible to a 50% reduction while acquiring numbers prior to number 51 of RCCS and 30% in numbers after number 50.
  8. During the conduction of the post-doctoral studies and research, the researcher boasts a user profile in the data management platform myCES and a CES email account.
  9. The CES post-doctorate researcher benefits from access to an identity card from the Post-graduate Mobility Centre of the UC, which allows resorting to the UC library network and university restaurants.
  10. In programmes with at least 12 months, CES grants personal accidents insurance to the post-doctorate researcher which shall cover expenses resulting from accidents that may occur during the conduction of their research programme.
  11. To the post-doctoral researchers is granted, by CES, institutional support to seek funding that may allow the development or organization of scientific events and research activities.

Article 5th  
Obligations

  1. The post-doctoral researcher must comply with the operating standards and regulations in force at CES, collaborating with the administrative services in the submission of information whenever such is requested and committing to a responsible usage of the materials available to the community, namely complying with standards for regulated use of the library collections.
  2. At the end of the post-doctoral studies and research programme, the researcher will submit to the CES Scientific Board a final report oof the activities, accompanied by an opinion of the supervisor. If the post-doctoral programme exceeds a 36 month duration there shall be a submission of interim report at the end of the second year.
  3. The post-doctoral researcher shall authorize CES to mention in their reports the scientific outputs developed during their working period at CES.
  4. All papers, publications or scientific activity promotion material resulting from the post-doctoral researcher’s work at CES must mention or contain the CES logotypes as well as the University of Coimbra.
  5. If the post-doctoral researchers are grantees or if they maintain a employment relationship with another institution, they must request the institution that funds the grant or the institution with which they maintain a employment relationship a statement, to be submitted to CES up to 15 days after the application approval communication, that acknowledges CES the status of host institution for the completion of the post-doctoral programme. 
  6. The researcher admitted to post-doctoral studies and research programme at CES must participate regularly in the scientific activities developed at the Centre and, namely, in an active fashion, in the activities of the research group they integrate. 
  7. The post-doctoral researcher position implies, during the duration of the programme, the maintenance and updating of curriculum personal page on the CES website as well as registration in the database of the Foundation for Science and Technology.
  8. Notwithstanding any other activities that he/her intends to propose and implement , the post-doctorate researcher must, up till the end of the programme , comply to submit at least one “Oficina do CES” and conduct , at least one seminar on the developed research.
  9. In stays that are equal or exceed 12 months, the post-doctoral researcher must participate, while trainer or organize, in the conduction of an advanced training course at CES or a curricular unit of graduate training of one of the degrees conferred by the University of Coimbra.
  10. In stays that exceed 12 months, inclusively, the post-doctoral researcher must submit, with supervision from their scientific supervisor, at least one publication in national or foreign journals with referee. In stays that exceed 24 months, inclusively, the post-doctoral researcher must submit at least two publications in national or foreign journals with referee.   

Article 6th
Implementation

This Regulation shall enter into force upon its approval by the CES Scientific Board.
