FOR YOUNG SOCIAL SCIENTISTS FROM COUNTRIES HAVING PORTUGUESE AS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
In 1999, the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra – Associate Laboratory, created a biennial award for young researchers (up to age 35) from any one of the countries having Portuguese as their official language. The CES Award is designed to recognize high quality work in the field of the social sciences and humanities. One of its main goals is to promote the recognition of studies which, by their outstanding merit, contribute to the development of Portuguese-speaking scientific communities.
The Jury for the 7th edition of the CES Award for Young Scientists having Portuguese as their Official Language was composed of the CES Director, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, and the Professors Cristiana Bastos (Institute for Social Sciences), Graça Carapinheiro (ISCTE-IUL), Leonardo Avritzer (Federal University of Minas Gerais) and Teresa Cruz e Silva (Eduardo Mondlane University).

The Jury for the 7th edition of the CES Award for Young Scientists having Portuguese as their Official Language, composed of the CES Director, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, and the Professors Cristiana Bastos (Institute for Social Sciences), Graça Carapinheiro (ISCTE-IUL), Leonardo Avritzer (Federal University of Minas Gerais) and Teresa Cruz e Silva (Eduardo Mondlane University), decided to bestow a joint Award and two Special Mentions to the following researchers:

The 7th edition of the CES Award, in the amount of 5,000.00 Euros, is sponsored by the Banco Espírito Santo. The award, established on 1999, aims to give due emphasis to the scientific production of young Portuguese-speaking researchers within the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The 6th Edition of the CES Award, in the amount of 5.000,00 Euros, is sponsored by Montepio Geral. The Award, instituted in 1999, was conceived by the Centre for Social Studies as a means of lending due prominence to the scientific production of young, Portuguese-speaking researchers in the field of the Social Sciences.
> About the
researchers
José Neves was born in Lisbon in
1978, and holds a Doctoral degree in History of Culture in the
Contemporary period, at ISCTE, since 2008. In the course of the last
years, he has focused mainly on three fields of debate and study:
history of communism, studies on nationalism and history of sports. In
2006, he published “Da Gaveta para Fora – Ensaios sobre
Marxistas”. In 2004 he published, with Nuno Domingos, “A época do
Futebol – o Jogo Visto pelas Ciências Sociais”. In 2002 he was
distinguisehd with the Gulbenkian Award for Research Incentive.
Presently, he is Post-doctoral Researcher at the Institute for Social
Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where he has initiated a project
on the history of mass concepts.
Alice Cruz Pereira is, since 2008, Master in
“Postcolonialisms and Global Citizenship”. Presently she is
enrolled in the CES/FEUC Doctoral Programme in “Postcolonialism and
Global Citizenship”.
Lígia Mori Madeira holds, since 2008, a Doctoral degree in Sociology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
Susana Manuela Ribeiro Dias da Silva holds, since 2008, a Doctoral degree in Sociology at the School of Arts and Humanities of Porto.

Comunismo e Nacionalismo em Portugal:
Política, Cultura e História no Século XX
The history of the opposition among the Communist Party and the
Estado Novo is , in part, the history of the contradiction between the
communist internationalism and the fascist nationalism, but it is also
the history of the opposition between two types of nationalism. In
Portugal, the communist nationalism cemented itself in the course of
the 1940’s, with the reorganization of the Portuguese Communist
Party. This book sets from the history of the PCP in order to interpret
the relation between communism and nationalism.
The Panel of the 5th
Edition of the CES Award for Young Scientists having Portuguese as
their Official Language was made up of CES’s Scientific
Director, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, and by Professors Graça
Carapinheiro (ISCTE), Hermínio Martins (Oxford University); Isabel
Allegro Magalhães (Universidade Nova de Lisboa); José Vicente Tavares
dos Santos (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul) and Teresa Cruz
e Silva (Universidade Eduardo Mondlane). Having met on 23 July 2007, at
CES, this panel bestowed the Award and two honourable mentions to the
work of the following researchers:
