10th Edition of the Manuel Lopes Awards
Study by the Observatory on Crises and Alternatives distinguished by the IEFP
    July, 2025

As part of the 10th edition of the Manuel Lopes Awards, promoted by the Institute for Employment and Professional Training (IEFP), one of the three prizes awarded distinguished a project developed at the Observatory on Crises and Alternatives, of the Centre for Social Studies (CES) at the University of Coimbra.

The category Studies and Research acknowledged the study “Trabalho e política de emprego. Um retrocesso evitável” [Labour and employment policy. An avoidable setback] by António Casimiro Ferreira, Carla Valadas, Manuel Carvalho da Silva, Hermes Augusto da Costa, Jorge Manuel Alves Caleiras, Maria da Paz Campos Lima, Pedro Hespanha, José Castro Caldas, Nuno Teles, and João Ramos de Almeida. The jury highlighted the research for its analytical depth and the relevance of the topic addressed, emphasising its contribution to the debate on employment policies and the valorisation of work.

Established in 2001 by the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity, and Social Security, the Manuel Lopes Award honours a unique figure in the defence of workers’ rights and the promotion of decent work. This distinction aims to encourage the production of knowledge and the dissemination of practises that contribute to a more just, inclusive, and sustainable labour market.
