About

The influence of a neoliberal mentality in the shaping of contemporary cities has contributed to the emergence of segregated, domesticated and depoliticised spaces. At the same time, it has also generated resistance to this hegemonic model, based on counter-uses that open up possibilities for a transformed city. Based on the concept of education developed by the educator Paulo Freire and the use of this concept for a possible reading of the urban territory, in terms of the city's potential to be an educating agent - propelling the expansion of citizenship and the implementation of a human and solidary praxis - the ways in which public spaces have been materialized in the city of Belo Horizonte, capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais will be examined. The analyses of two specific urban realities - the praxis of the Bloco de Carnaval de Rua e de Favela "Seu Vizinho", and the Parque Jornalista Eduardo Couri - are the result of ethnographic experience, direct participation, documentary and bibliographic research.

This is a presentation by Ana Paola da Silva Alves, PhD candidate in Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and visiting PhD candidate at CES-UC, sharing the results of her doctoral internship at the University of Coimbra
