New projects to be conducted at CES seek to strengthen gender equality

CES joins project partnership that aims to strengthen gender equality in scientific research conducted at the UC
The project "GendER@UC - Gender-Equal Research", funded in the scope of EEA Grants - Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area, arose from the articulation between the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research of Coimbra University (IIIUC), the Vice-Rectory of the UC in charge of research (project coordinator), and the team of the project "SUPERA | Supporting the Promotion of Gender Equality in Research and Academia", with the aim of strengthening the integration of the gender perspective in the processes and contents of research of the UC.

From a multiple approach, which aggregates several types of actions with differentiated focuses - on the empowerment of female researchers, on institutional transformations and on the transversalization of gender analysis in basic and applied science - the project will allow to deepen and extend the work initiated with the SUPERA project in response to inequalities and biases identified in its diagnostic phase.

Through mentoring initiatives and support for women's careers, diagnostic actions, support/empowerment of key stakeholders and adaptation of institutional procedures it is intended to promote gender equality in research conducted at the University of Coimbra, both in terms of management of the research process and career, and in terms of the content of the knowledge produced and disseminated at the UC, promoting a more inclusive, representative and socially relevant knowledge.

In addition to IIIUC (promoting entity) and CES, the project partnership, which will run for three years, includes the University of Iceland and has the collaboration of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), AMONET-Association of Portuguese Women Scientists and the scientist Jessica Cantlon, from Carnegie Mellon University, USA.

CES Research seeks to combat gender segregation in educational and vocational choices of girls and boys
"IGualPro - Professions have no gender" is also a research-action project, with funding from EEA Grants, which, over the next three years, aims to combat gender segregation in educational and vocational choices of girls and boys and the consequent segregation of professional choices, through the deconstruction of gender stereotypes associated with different study areas and respective professions, with special focus on those in which there is an effective segregation between girls and boys.

It aims to guarantee the same opportunities for women and men in the labour market, combating segregation in the educational and vocational choices of children and young people and the consequent segregation of professional choices, through the deconstruction of gender stereotypes associated to the different areas of study (training) and respective professions, through motivational campaigns directly aimed at men opting for professions where they are clearly segregated, according to the list of target professions of the measure for the Promotion of Gender Equality in the Labour Market.

Therefore, the project will promote, among young people attending IEFP Courses, the deconstruction of stereotypes associated to professions where gender segregation is confirmed and proposes to carry out and publish a study on the stereotypes associated to professional choices among young people attending Professional Courses; to organize a national campaign to combat gender stereotypes in the choice of professions and the creation of pedagogical materials, interactive videos promoting equality between girls and boys regarding educational and professional choices and deconstructing gender stereotypes associated with different study areas and respective professions, in alignment with the national strategy for equality and non-discrimination 2018-2030 - "Portugal + Equal".

The Conciliation and Gender Equality programme, under which these two projects will be developed, is funded by EEA Grants - European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 and implemented by the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG).
