Overview

International migrations are of the most poignant and relevant realities of contemporary times. According to the International Organization for Migration in 2017, the total number of international immigrants was 258 million, a record number in a global growth trend. Besides its extent, the importance of migrations lies in the intensity, diversity and complexity with which they occur, leaving no society apart from the political, economic, social and humanitarian issues that the urgency of their dynamics provokes. This age, already named the age of migrations, calls for a reflection on the matches and mismatches of the law in face of the strength of this reality and migrants, refugees, human trafficking, and the borders they cross. Urgent reflection taking into account the questioning of the European border management paradigm, everyday migrants and tragedies in the Mediterranean.

The aim of this event is to identify the paradoxes of contemporary international migrations, to observe the fundamental rights of immigrants and refugees in the European space, and to reflect on human trafficking and its legal problematisation.

This seminar takes place in the framework of the project "The Charter of Fundamental Rights 'in action', funded by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Justice, in partnership with the Human Rights Institute of Catalonia (Spain), the University of Utrecht ) and the University of Szczecin (Poland). This project, developed and coordinated by the Permanent Observatory of Justice of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, has the privilege of having the special support of the Superior Council of the Magistracy, the Attorney General's Office, the Regional Councils of the Bar Association and the Centre for Judicial Studies.
