Call for paper: UNDISCIPLINED ENVIRONMENTS

International conference of the European Network of Political Ecology ENTITLE (Stockholm, 20-23 March 2016)

Power and conflict are at the core of socio-environmental change, but existing knowledge and higher education structures are ill-equipped to address them. Most of socially-relevant environmental research takes place within isolated disciplinary silos and has a disciplinary orientation. Questions are framed in relation to scholarly traditions, not in terms of the structure of the problems and the conflicts at hand, which transcend conventional departmentalization. However, as we live in undisciplined environments, we need undisciplined thinking.

To discuss the possibilities for an undisciplinary political ecology, the European Network ‘Entitle’ – an FP7 ‘Marie Curie’ action n.289374 – launches the International Conference UNDISCIPLINED ENVIRONMENTS, co-organized by the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra and the Environmental Humanities Laboratory of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

Call for paper IV ENCONTRO CITCEM / 4TH CITCEM CONFERENCE.Cruzar Fronteiras: Ligar as Margens da HISTÓRIA AMBIENTAL (Crossing Borders: Connecting Edges of ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY), Porto, FLUP, 5 a 7 Novembro 2015/ 5 to 7 November 2015

The CITCEM (Trandisciplinary Centre of Culture, Space and Memory) Faculty of Arts of
the University of Porto is honored to organize its fourth conference, with the focus this
year on the theme of environmental history, Crossing Borders: Connecting Edges of
ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY, 5 to 7 November 2015.
The CITCEM Strategic Plan, recently approved by the Portuguese research foundation
FCT, has proposed four lines of research which cross-cut the different research groups.
Environmental history and maritime culture represent one of the strategic lines,
bringing together interests in population and health, territorial cohesion, cultural
diversity and transversality, and integrating researchers from different areas, such as
History, Geography, Archeology, Historical Demography, Literature, Art, Museology,
Cinema, etc.
Recently some of the members of the CITCEM Unit participated in and organized
several initiatives which unite scholars, students and research groups. The most recent
of these was organized with a view to creating a lasting legacy of the 2nd World
Congress of Environmental History (WCEH) 2014 ‘Environmental Histories of the
Portuguese World’, which took place in Guimarães on 14 July; this included an appeal
for the creation of the Environmental History Network in Portugal. The WCEH
organization was the perfect opportunity to allow the perspectives of different
scholars to be mixed. A round table discussion promoted this interdisciplinary area
from the point of view of the humanities. An overview was provided of the activities of
several researchers in environmental history, from different disciplinary areas, thus
taking the first steps on the path leading to future research. More

The cfp is also available in Portuguese here.
