About

In this session, the speaker proposes an analysis of the emergence and disappearance of cities in the Brazilian Amazon throughout the 20th century and up to the present day, against the backdrop of developmentalist policies and the technical-authoritarian urbanisation model. On the one hand, we will analyse how the discourse on the failure of these cities mobilises some of the stereotypes associated with the rainforest, such as that of a green hell, and, on the other, how their socio-environmental resilience relativizes the very idea of abandonment.
