Alexandre de Sousa Carvalho is a junior researcher at the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra. At CES, he was a member of the Decode/M project team where he facilitated the thematic area on "Populism and Extreme Masculinities" and actively participated in the core study and in the thematic areas "MeToo" and "Fatherhood, Domestic Roles and Care". He is currently a member of the research project UnCover - Sexual Violence in the Portuguese Media Landscape. Since September 2023, he has been part of the Masculinidades.pt Observatory, where he is the Observatory's communications coordinator and a member of the research team for the EMiNC project (Male Involvement in Care Initiatives). Since February 2017, he has been a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra.
Ana Rita Brito é socióloga e formadora na área da Igualdade de Género, Tráfico de Seres Humanos, Violência Doméstica, entre outros. Coordenou diversos projetos na área da Igualdade de Género. Desde 2015, integra a associação Akto – Direitos Humanos e Democracia, onde coordenou o projeto "Programa H e M - Promoção da Cidadania e Igualdade Género entre Jovens". Em 2016, 2017 e 2019 representou a Plataforma Portuguesa para os Direitos das Mulheres na 60ª, 61ª e 63ª Sessão da Comissão do Estatuto das Mulheres, nas Nações Unidas, em Nova Iorque. Atualmente é Coordenadora da Casa Femina - Centro de Acolhimento de Emergência para Mulheres (e meninas sinalizadas como vítimas de violência de género, nomeadamente práticas tradicionais nefastas como casamentos infantis, precoces e forçados, e mutilação genital) da Akto e Técnica de Apoio à Vítima no Centro de Acolhimento e Proteção para Crianças Vítimas de Tráfico de Seres Humanos gerido pela Akto.
Ângelo Fernandes é o fundador da Quebrar o Silêncio — a primeira associação portuguesa de apoio especializado para homens e rapazes sobreviventes de violência sexual — e autor do livro De Que Falamos Quando Falamos de Violência Sexual Contra Crianças?, um guia dirigido a pais, mães e pessoas cuidadoras com orientações para a prevenção do abuso sexual de crianças. Além do apoio prestado aos homens sobreviventes na Quebrar o Silêncio, trabalha no sentido de informar e sensibilizar o público em geral sobre violência sexual, especificamente contra homens e rapazes, contribuindo para a erradicação de mitos e crenças sobre abuso sexual e para a desconstrução de estereótipos de género. Realiza ações de formação sobre violência sexual para profissionais de diversas áreas e estudantes universitários, e dinamiza workshops para pais, mães e pessoas cuidadoras para promover a prevenção da violência sexual contra crianças. Escreve sobre violência sexual para o Sapo24 e outros meios de comunicação.
Carla Cerqueira é doutorada em Ciências da Comunicação – especialização em Psicologia da Comunicação pela Universidade do Minho, (2012) e fez pós-doutoramento na mesma área na Universidade do Minho, na Universidade Autónoma de Barcelona e na Universidade Erasmus de Roterdão (de 2013 a 2018). Atualmente é Professora Associada na Universidade Lusófona, diretora do Doutoramento em Comunicação e Ativismos e investigadora integrada no CICANT – Centro de Investigação em Comunicação Aplicada, Cultura e Novas Tecnologias. Os seus interesses de investigação incluem género, feminismos, interseccionalidade, ONGs, ativismo, cidadania digital e media. Integra vários projetos de investigação nacionais e internacionais; é a investigadora principal do projeto “FEMglocal – Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions” (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021). É a coordenadora do Comité de Investigação e Políticas da GAMAG – Global Alliance on Media and Gender. Faz parte da direção da APEM – Associação Portuguesa de Estudos sobre as Mulheres e integra o Comité de Ética da ECREA.
Daniela Sofia Neto é Licenciada e Mestre em Sociologia pela Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra. Atualmente é Doutoranda em Sociologia na mesma instituição e o seu projeto consiste em dar continuidade à investigação iniciada no mestrado, pretendendo analisar as representações sociais de estudantes da Universidade de Coimbra relativamente ao assédio sexual desde a década de 1960. A tese de doutoramento indicada é financiada através da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (2022.12798.BD) e tem como entidade de acolhimento o Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra. Integrou, enquanto Investigadora Júnior, o projeto "HOU$ING: Financeirização da habitação no Portugal do século XXI: Representações sociais, práticas e implicações políticas" (2022-2023) e atualmente é membro da equipa do projeto UnCoveR - Violência sexual nas paisagens mediáticas portuguesas, no Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra.
Francisco Azevedo Mendes é Professor Auxiliar no Departamento de História do Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade do Minho e investigador do Laboratório de Paisagens, Património e Território (Lab2PT) que integra o IN2PAST – Laboratório Associado para a Investigação e Inovação em Património, Artes, Sustentabilidade e Território. No IN2PAST, participa da linha temática "Archives, from Preventive Preservation to Digitalization". Faz parte da equipa do projeto exploratório "Landscapes of Terror, Violence and Forensic Heritages in the Postcolonial Lusophone space". Foi coordenador do Grupo de Investigação Histórica da Comissão Independente para o Estudo dos Abusos Sexuais de Crianças na Igreja Católica Portuguesa (2022-23).
Gary Barker é o Diretor Internacional e o fundador da Promundo, uma ONG sediada no Brasil com escritórios no Ruanda, Burundi, Portugal e EUA, que trabalha no envolvimento de homens e rapazes na igualdade de género. Liderou projetos, equipas de investigação e programas de desenvolvimento visando homens e rapazes nos Balcãs, Brasil, Sul da Ásia, África subsaariana, América Central, Caraíbas e EUA, incluindo cenários pós-conflito. É cofundador da MenEngage, uma aliança global de mais de 400 ONG e agências das Nações Unidas que trabalham para envolver homens e rapazes na igualdade de género. É também membro do UN Secretary General's Men's Leaders Network to end violence against women. É cofundador da MenCare, uma campanha global ativa em mais de 25 países que pretende promover o envolvimento igual e não-violento dos homens no cuidado parental. É investigador do Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra.
Inês Amaral é Professora Associada da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, onde leciona na Licenciatura e Mestrado em Jornalismo e Comunicação e no Doutoramento em Ciências da Comunicação. Doutorada em Ciências da Comunicação (especialidade em Media Interativos) pela Universidade do Minho, é investigadora integrada do Centro de Estudos Sociais e investigadora colaboradora do Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Sociedade. Tem desenvolvido investigação sobre sociabilidades nas redes sociais digitais; participação e media sociais; género e media; literacia mediática e digital; tecnologias e envelhecimento ativo; audiências e consumos mediáticos na era digital. É investigadora responsável do projeto “MyGender - Práticas mediadas de jovens adultos: promover justiça de género nas e através de aplicações móveis” (PTDC/COM-CSS/5947/2020), e investigadora corresponsável do projeto “MediaTrust.Lab - Laboratório de Media Regionais para a Confiança e Literacia Cívicas” (PTDC/COM-JOR/3866/2020). Integra as equipas dos Observatório masculinidades.pt e Observatório do Ciberjornalismo.
Inês Amaral is an Associate Professor in the Communication Section of the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Information (DFCI) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. She serves as a department deputy director of the DFCI and coordinator of the Communication Section of the DFCI. PhD in Communication Sciences (Interactive Media) at the University of Minho. She is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra (Thematic Line Europe and the Global South: Heritages and Dialogues). She is a member of the research team at Observatório Masculinidades.pt. Inês is a collaborating researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre. She has developed research on sociability in digital social networks, participation and social media, gender and media, media and digital literacy, technologies and active ageing, and audiences and media consumption in the digital age. She is the PI of the project MyGender - Mediated young adults practices: advancing gender justice in and across mobile apps (PTDC/COM-CSS/5947/2020) and Co-PI of the project MediaTrust.Lab - Local Media Lab for Civic Trust and Literacy (PTDC/COM-JOR/3866/2020).
Isabel Ventura é investigadora do Grupo de Investigação em Estudos sobre as Mulheres, Sociedade e Cultura, do Centro de Estudos das Migrações e das Relações Interculturais, da Universidade Aberta. É docente convidada na Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Católica do Porto, onde coordena um seminário de mestrado sobre Direito e Crimes Sexuais, e professora adjunta convidada na Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa. É doutorada em sociologia, pela Universidade do Minho, com uma investigação sobre violência sexual e justiça, que ganhou o Prémio APAV Investigação 2016 e o Prémio Maria Lamas 2018. É autora dos livros Medusa no Palácio da Justiça ou Uma História da Violência Sexual e de As Primeiras Mulheres Repórteres: Portugal décadas 60 e 70, ambos editados pela Tinta-da-China.
Karen Boyle is Professor of Feminist Media Studies at Strathclyde. Her research has long focused on questions of violence, gender and representation. She has recently co-edited (with Susan Berridge) the Routledge Companion on Gender, Media, Violence (2023). Earlier publications include Media and Violence: Gendering the Debate (Sage 2005), #MeToo, Weinstein and Feminism (Palgrave, 2019) and, as editor, Everyday Pornography (Routledge 2010). She has additional research interests in media audiences, gender and news, and the women's movement in Scotland. She was Scottish coordinator for the Global Media Monitoring Project Global Media Monitoring Project (2015, 2020) and, in 2018, she led a Royal Society of Edinburgh-funded Workshop series on Tackling Gendered Inequalities in Scottish News, which led to the foundation of Gender Equal Media Scotland, a grouping of academics, journalists and activists working towards gender equality in Scottish media.
Joana Amaral Cardoso - Jornalista do jornal Público desde 1999, trabalhou nas secções de Sociedade, Última Hora, na revista Pública e no suplemento Fugas e recebeu o prémio Reportagem Maria Lamas da Comissão pela Igualdade de Género em 2006. É jornalista da secção de Cultura do Público desde 2007 e trabalha as áreas do audiovisual e da cultura popular, interessada em aplicar a lente do género a diferentes fenómenos. Acompanha desde 2017 o fenómeno #MeToo nas suas áreas de trabalho.
Júlia Garraio is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra, where she integrates the research thematic line on Democracy, Justice and Human Rights. She is co-coordinator of the working groups Policredos - Religions and Society and GPS - The Research Group on Sexualities. She is a fellow (CEEC) of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) with the project Dis/entangling Rape: Sexual Violence in Portuguese literature and cinema in the 21st century (2023-2028). She is Co-PI of the FCT project UnCoveR - Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape (2023-2025). She is co-founder of the international research group SVAC-Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict. She is review editor of the European Journal of Women's Studies. She integrated the Historical Research Group of the Independent Commission for the Study of Child Sexual Abuse in the Portuguese Catholic Church (2022-23). She participated in several projects in the areas of Memory Studies, Gender Studies, Media, Literature and Cultural Studies. She was engaged as a researcher by the projects DeCodeM - (De)Coding Masculinities: Towards an enhanced understanding of media's role in shaping perceptions of masculinities in Portugal and DeOthering - Deconstructing Risk and Otherness: hegemonic scripts and counter-narratives on migrants/refugees and 'internal Others' in Portuguese and European mediascapes.
Maria João Faustino é doutorada em Psicologia pela Universidade de Auckland, onde fez investigação sobre heteronormalização do sexo anal no contexto heterossexual e respetivas dinâmicas coercivas. Tem feito investigação sobre violência sexual, dinâmicas genderizadas e representações mediáticas. Tem desenvolvido o tema do consentimento sexual, de uma perspetiva crítica, em publicações científicas (e.g. Violence Against Women; Feminism and Psychology) e nos media. Tem colaborado com associações feministas e de apoio a vítimas-sobreviventes de violência sexual. Colaborou em projetos sobre violência sexual baseada em imagens (VSBI) e violência na intimidade. É representante da Plataforma Portuguesa para os Direitos das Mulheres no Lobby Europeu de Mulheres. É investigadora do projeto UnCover. Violência Sexual nas Paisagens Mediáticas Portuguesas.
Marta Araújo (PhD, University of London, Institute of Education, School Educational Foundations and Policy Studies, 2003) is a Principal Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra (CES). Her research addresses two complementary lines of enquiry: i) history education and knowledge production, focusing on the teaching and the public history of (anti-)colonialism and enslavement; ii) public policy, political discourse, and ethno-racial discrimination. Marta is Vice-President of the Scientific Board at CES, where she lectures at the doctoral level. At CES, she integrates the Education Policy and Professional Development Observatory (CeiED/CES) and the Education and Citizen Science Working Group (CES). Currently on the Editorial Board of publications in the sociology of 'race' and education in Brazil, Britain, Portugal and the United States, She has acted as a scientific advisor on ethno-racial equality and participated in selected expert meetings at national and international levels. She has also been engaged in outreach activities.
Paula Cosme Pinto foi jornalista do Expresso 10 anos, mas mudou-se para o outro lado da comunicação para integrar a equipa da agência O Apartamento. Contudo, manteve a coluna de opinião A Vida de Saltos Altos no site do semanário, com análise regular sobre os desafios da igualdade de género. Pelo caminho, publicou "Os Segredos da Maleta Vermelha", um livro sobre a sexualidade das portuguesas, e mais recentemente lançou o podcast "Um Género de Conversa", distinguido com o Prémio Vozes 2022 no PODES - Festival de Podcasts. Ativista pelos direitos femininos, é convidada regular em conferências e debates sobre o tema.
Ricardo Higuera Mellado - Natural do Chile e hoje também cidadão português. Jornalista, Mestre em Cultura e Comunicação pela ULisboa e estudante do Doutoramento em Estudos de Género (ULisboa – UNova de Lisboa). Tem estudos avançados em Igualdade de Género e Masculinidades. Como investigador, integrou o projeto ALLINTERACT – Widening and diversifying citizen engagement in science (H2020) entre 2021 e 2023, e o projeto Como ficar em casa? Intervenções imediatas de combate à Covid-19 em bairros precários da AML, financiado pela FCT. Como ativista, é cofundador da Men Talks e em 2016 participou na conformação de Hombres Tejedores no Chile, um coletivo que utiliza a ação de tricotar em espaços públicos para desconstruir os estereótipos de género e visibilizar outras masculinidades. Atualmente é facilitador do projeto To be Kind(er) - Quem conta és tu!, financiado ao abrigo do programa BIP/ZIP, e do projeto X-MEN (Masculinities, Empathy, Non-Violence), criado pelo Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra.
Rita Alcaire Anthropologist and documentary filmmaker. She is developing a post-doctoral project entitled ENGAGE - Promoting gender equality and social justice through social science communication and transmedia storytelling. Researcher in the UnCoveR - Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape (2023-2026) project. She integrates the Democracy, Justice and Human Rights Thematic Line, the Research Group on Sexualities, and the Citizen Science and Education Working Group. With more than two decades of experience using audiovisual methodologies and arts-based research, her research interests centre on the study of gender and sexualities, mental health, and pop culture and on expanding the relationship between theory and practice of science communication and social sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Human Rights in Contemporary Societies (CES/III, 2019). Has been part of national (Ouvir Vozes, MyGender, Equal.STEAM) and European (CILIA LGBTQI+, KINDER and REMO) projects as a researcher and consultant, invited lecturer at the MA and Ph.D. level in (mental) health, media and communication and contemporary studies, organized advanced training for postgraduate students and early career researchers on mental health in academia and social science communication and promoted outreach activities for different non-academic audiences.
Rita Almeida de Carvalho é investigadora do Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa. Publicou vários estudos sobre as relações entre o Estado Português e a Igreja, de que se destacam Correspondência António de Oliveira Salazar e Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira, 1928-1968 (2010), A Concordata de Salazar. Portugal-Santa Sé (2013) e ‘Interwar Dictatorships, the Catholic Church and Concordats’ (Contemporary European History, 2016). Dirigiu a equipa que procedeu à reconstituição e à inventariação dos arquivos do Ministério do Ultramar, sob a coordenação científica de José Mattoso, e foi responsável pelo Arquivo de História Social do Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (2012-2022). Integrou o Grupo de Investigação Histórica da Comissão Independente para o Estudo dos Abusos Sexuais de Crianças na Igreja Católica Portuguesa (2022-23). Coordena o projeto de investigação “Construindo o Povo de Salazar: Arquitectura, nacionalismo e identidade nacional (1932-1945)” (FCT, ref. 2022.03543.PTDC). Integra a Comissão Comemorativa 50 anos 25 de Abril.
Rita Basílio de Simões é Professora Auxiliar da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, onde leciona na Licenciatura e no Mestrado em Jornalismo e Comunicação e nos Doutoramentos em Ciências da Comunicação e em Estudos Feministas. É investigadora do Centro de Estudos Sociais, onde tem desenvolvido investigação sobre média, género e espaço público. Colabora também, como investigadora, com o Instituto de Comunicação da Universidade Nova e o Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares da Universidade de Coimbra. Doutorada em Ciências da Comunicação, é coordenadora do Grupo de Trabalho em Género e Sexualidades da Associação Portuguesa de Ciências da Comunicação, vogal da Assembleia Geral da Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Sobre as Mulheres e membro do comité de peritos/as do Conselho da Europa sobre violência contra as mulheres e raparigas facilitada pela tecnologia. Desde 2019, é coordenadora nacional do Global Media Monitoring Project.
Rita Santos is junior researcher at the Centre for Social Studies. She is a PhD candidate in "International Politics and Conflict Resolution", School of Economics, University of Coimbra. She holds a MA degree in Peace Studies from the Department of Peace Studies, University of Bradford, and a BsC in International Relations, School of Economics, University of Coimbra. She is member of the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA). Over the last fifteen years she has worked on ten research projects in the fields of Feminism, IR and Security Studies; violence, gender and small arms; the agenda Women, Peace and Security; media and political representation of migrants, refugees and "internal others"; and gender equality and development aid. In addition to this, it is also worth mentioning her work in co-coordinating and co-editing the P@x Bulletin of the Peace Studies Group (2008-2014), and the several research and training works she has undertaken for inter/national think tanks and NGO such as AKTO (Portugal), NOREF (Norway), SWEFOR (Sweden), Promundo-US (now Equimundo) alongside evaluation and public policy drafting work for Instituto Promundo (Brazil), Plataforma Portuguesa das ONGD, and Instituto Camões (Portugal). Her current research interests include: Feminism and IR/Security Studies; violence, gender and small arms; the agenda Women, Peace and Security; and gender and racialization in the far right discourse and policy.
Sérgio Ribeiro Pinto nasceu no Porto. Doutor em História pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2013), onde defendeu a tese Servidores de Deus e Funcionários de César. O clero paroquial como "classe" socioprofissional (1882-1917). É professor auxiliar convidado na Universidade Católica Portuguesa e no Instituto Superior de Teologia de Évora, tendo lecionado na Saint Joseph University (Macau). Foi bolseiro de pós-doutoramento (2017-2023) com o projecto «As tonsuras de Leviatã: os funcionários eclesiásticos e a administração do Estado liberal em Portugal (1862-1911)». É investigador integrado do Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa (UCP-CEHR), de cuja Direção foi vogal (2014-2020). Integrou o Grupo de Investigação Histórica da Comissão Independente para o Estudo dos Abusos Sexuais de Crianças na Igreja Católica Portuguesa (2022-2023).
Sílvia Roque Sílvia Roque is an Associated Researcher at the Central for Social Studies, University of Coimbra. She completed her PhD in International Relations in 2014 by University of Coimbra, her Master in African Studies in 2007 by ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa and she graduated in International Relations in 2002 by University of Coimbra. Sofia José Santos is an Assistant Professor in International Relations at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra, and a Researcher at the Center for Social Studies, where she coordinates the UNCOVER project as a Principal Investigator. Since 2008 she has developed research on media, peace and violence, media and foreign policy; internet and technopolitics; and media and masculinities. Within CES, she is also co-editor of Alice News. She holds a PhD and an MA in International Politics and Conflict Resolution from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, a degree in International Relations from the same university, and a Diploma in Advanced Studies in Communication Sciences from ISCTE-IUL. Previously, she was an Invited Assistant Professor in International Relations at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (2016-2019), a postdoctoral researcher at OBSERVARE / UAL (2015/2016) and CES (2015), and researcher and coordinator of media and communication in Promundo-Europa (2014-2015). She was also a visiting scholar at the Flemish Peace Institute and a Marie Curie fellow at the Universiteit Utrecht. In addition to publications, conferences and national and international research projects, it is also worth mentioning her work in co-coordinating and co-editing the P@x Bulletin of the NHUMEP Peace Studies Group, her involvement in international networks, social movements, and the several research works she has undertaken for international think tanks and development agencies such as NOREF, UKAID, Palladium, and Promundo-US. Her current research interests focus on media, international relations, peace and violence; media and masculinities; and critical internet studies.
Tatiana Moura Feminist, mother and Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra (CES-UC), where she co-coordinates the Observatory on Masculinities and coordinates several national and international projects on masculinities and gender violence prevention with a relevant impact in the production of contributions to programs and public policies on gender equality and masculinities in Portugal and in the European context. She is a member of the Permanent Commission of the Scientific Committee of CES, associate Director of UniPeriferias (Maré, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) since March 2018, Senior Fellow of Equimundo: Center for Masculinities and Social Justice (Washington DC, USA), member of the MenEngage Global Alliance and co-founder and member of the Steering Committee of the MenEngage Iberia Network since 2018. Between 2011 and 2019 she was the Executive Director of Instituto Promundo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). In the last twenty years, she has coordinated projects on masculinities, caregiving, violence and trajectories of non-violence in peripheral contexts, particularly in Latin America and Europe. She holds a PhD in Peace, Conflicts and Democracy from the University Jaume I, Spain, a Master's degree in Sociology from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra and a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from the same Faculty. Her research interests focus on issues related to feminism in International Relations, masculinities, urban violence and newest wars.
