Symposium
On the 14 and 15 of June 2011, the Symposium "Children of the Colonial Wars: postmemory and representations" took place at the CIUL Auditorium (CML), near to CES-Lisboa. The event counted with the participation of researchers and consultants of this project, and with two guests: Luiz Gamito (Psychiatry) and Paula Ribeiro Lobo (Art History; Universidade Nova de Lisboa).
The main objective of this event was to disseminate the main results of this research to the participants in the project and the public in general. However, a second objective was reached following the multidisciplinarity of this project. In fact, the Symposium was a moment of rich dialogue between the different academic fields involved (cultural studies, psychiatry and sociology) and the arts, from photography, to theatre, cinema, literature and music.
The first day started with a multimedia projection by Tommaso Rada, and ended with the presentation of the play "IGNARA#Guerra Colonial - Fazer o Trabalho de Casa" [Colonial War: doing the homework], a project developed, directed and represented by Susana Gaspar, Paulo Campos dos Reis and Filipe Araújo.
The afternoon of the second day was devoted to the arts. First, two documentaries were presented: "Quem vai à Guerra" [Who goes to war], by Marta Pessoa (2011), and "Poeticamente Exausto, Verticalmente Só: a história de José Bação Leal" [the history of José Bação Leal], by Luísa Marinho (2007). Second, a round table of artists took place, with the presence of seven 'Children of the Colonial Wars' who have produced pieces dedicated to this topic in plastic arts (Ana Vidigal), in literature (Norberto Vale Cardoso and Rui Vieira), in cinema (Marta Pessoa and Luísa Marinho), in theatre (Susana Gaspar) and in music (Pedro Branco).
The Symposium ended with the launch of Antologia da Memória Poética da Guerra Colonial (Afrontamento, 2011), a book by Margarida Calafate Ribeiro and Roberto Vecchi.
