International Colloquium

Municipal Policies towards Gender Equality

May 11 and 12, 2015

Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra

Abstract

The main objective of the colloquium is to launch a participatory scientific reflection on the conceptions, processes and outcomes of the transversalization of gender equality in local policies developed by the Portuguese municipalities. The territorialisation of sexual equality policies will be discussed, from concrete experiences shared by academics, advisors, technical staff and managers and that, within the municipalities, have produced diagnoses and action plans against inequalities and towards the promotion of equality between women and men. Special attention will be given to, on the one hand, organizational change strategies, and on the other, municipal intervention in the various sectorial policies. Some of the hundreds of municipalities that received public funding to develop and implement their plans for equality will present and analyse their concrete experiences, difficulties, challenges and best practices.

Anticipating the presence of numerous people from the municipalities or academic and consultancy structures involved in the hundred and fifty recently completed or ongoing municipal plans, the Colloquium will, therefore, bear in mind a reality that has remained in the dark with high loss, be it for the promoters of projects or for the gender equality mechanisms that have funded and given support to these projects, and yet for the gender equality cause.
