Overview

Society's vision of heritage destinations has undergone a paradigm shift over the past decades. Of goods with a value in themselves and which must be the target of strict protection measures to pass them on to future generations, the perception has been evolving towards configuring heritage goods as a resource for development. This is a dynamic perspective that has been enriched by the growing awareness of the role that culture can play in strengthening social identities and creating new opportunities to (re)qualify the different dimensions of the urban environment.

In this context, a new breadth of public policies for heritage shows signs of a shift towards strengthening international commitments to sustainable, socially just and culturally enriching development. In this context, the notion of heritage as bottom-up social construction rather than top-down political construction is of extreme importance.

Within this framework, the Safeguards Research and Development Meeting will focus on discussing the uses and values associated with heritage in different geographical, national and international contexts, with a view to integrating them into public policies for development.
The 2nd Safeguards and Development Meeting is a joint initiative of Perfil D - Architectural Heritage of the FAUP's PhD Programme in Architecture and of the MA in Integrated Urban Rehabilitation of the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (dARQ), with extension to the respective R&D units, the Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies (CEAU-PACT Group) and the Centre for Social Studies (CES).

Organised by Rui Fernandes Póvoas and Teresa Cunha Ferreira (FAUP | CEAU) and Adelino Gonçalves and Margarida Relvão (dARQ |CES).
