Overview

Come visit the Azores here in Coimbra… a little fishing and Azorean culture, a new photo narrative book, some music, some Chamarrita dancing….

Bio notes

José Manuel Mendes holds a PhD in Sociology from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, where he works as Full Professor of Sociology. Researcher at the Center for Social Studies, he has worked in the areas of risk, social vulnerability, disasters and climate crisis, planning, public policies and citizenship. He is coordinator of the Observatório do Risco-OSIRIS, based at the Center for Social Studies, and Director of the Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais.

Alison Laurie Neilson, Coordinator "A sea full of life: Visions of the Azores" Collaborating researcher CES, Center for Social Studies and researcher CICS.NOVA Interdisciplinary Center for Social Sciences, NOVA University of Lisbon. Alison is an interdisciplinary researcher, transcending the boundaries between arts/science, academic/non-academic and researcher/researched in knowledge creation and fisheries governance. She works on environmental justice issues in small-scale fishing communities in the Azores Islands, Portugal. She conducts narrative and informed research into the arts on how sustainability is understood and used in education and fisheries policy. She looks at the way knowledge, wisdom and politics mix.

Andrea Inocêncio is a visual artist and performer. She holds a PhD in Contemporary Art (Collegio das Artes da Universidade de Coimbra), with a thesis entitled "Silêncio - a procura do avesso do espaço urbano (ou do avesso de mim)". She has been working with women in the Azores, and in 2009 she created “À prova de fogo e de bala” - an expression of their identities was developed in a workshop in partnership with the Association for Equality and Rights of Women (UMAR-Açores), the Women's Association of Fishermen and Shipowners of Terceira Island, and the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Azores..
