Lecture-Debate 'POLITICAL ECONOMY IN THE CENTRE REGION'

Forest fires and the socio-economic model: relationships and ideas for Coimbra

April 10, 2024, 14h30

Escola Superior Agrária de Coimbra (ESAC-IPC)

This session brings together academics from different backgrounds linked to Coimbra's academic milieu to discuss and launch ideas on a problem that has been affecting the Coimbra region and the centre of the country in general for several years, but which at the same time is projected as a crucial issue for the future of the whole country. There is an urgent need to address the relationship between forest fires and the socio-economic model in place. It is also important to define ideas for policies and action plans to help prevent the occurrence and mitigate the effects of these natural disasters, which are becoming more significant in the context of climate change. The necessary environmental and land-use planning response must be in line with the social and economic responses given to the resident populations.
