Tip of the Tongue | Stories, Memories and Innovation in Emigration

Narratives and life histories of Portuguese emigrants, through the collection and analysis of texts, oral and performative testimonies.

The stories lived by Portuguese emigration constitute an invisible heritage of Portuguese language and culture, which is evidenced in the narratives and testimonies of those who left for another country, through the collection and analysis of texts, oral and performative testimonies, interviews and conversation circles.

Applying collaborative methodologies using creative writing, bilingual theatre, story circles, analysis of linguistic repertoires and digital social memory, the project to «Na Ponta da Língua | Histórias, Memórias e Inovação na Emigração» [Tip of the tongue | Stories, Memories and Innovation in Emigration] intends to give visibility to the “submerged biographies” of the long and wide history of emigration in Portuguese, calling for a new look on these realities.

Articulating people and local cultural and academic institutions, it proposes to develop a participatory research in three communities of the Portuguese diaspora (Brazil, USA, France), with the prospective to spread out to other Portuguese communities around the world.

Using horizontal and participative methodologies, the digital space "Na Ponta da Língua” (website and platform) welcomes all Portuguese emigrants, in any country, with an interest in sharing their personal testimonies, documents, and experiences of emigration (click on “Fale connosco”).

The project articulates past, present and future and contributes to the better knowledge and appreciation of Portuguese emigration in the digital era, and to the inter-knowledge of different generations of Portuguese migrants. It also enables the networking of members of different communities (in different countries of immigration), and between the emigrant communities and Portugal (country and regions of origin). The ambition of the project is to use the informative, inter-knowledge and pedagogical dimensions for a broader and more dynamic understanding of Portuguese emigration, articulating it with the dynamics of renewal and use of Portuguese language and culture in the diaspora.
