Colloquium

ON/OFF: Surfing the digital cultures

November 26, 2015, 09h45

Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra

Abstract

The meeting aims to establish itself as a space for sociological debate regarding the digital culture, mobilizing, for this purpose, the empirical research and theoretical reflection conducted in Portugal regarding artistic, cultural and communicative practices that operate based on technologies and digital media. The aim is to question the specific nature of digital media as milieus for creation, production, circulation, sharing and receiving of artistic, cultural and communication forms and contents, exploring the effects that the use of digital technologies have on the arts, culture and communication. In a broader sense, the meeting is proposed to open an interdisciplinary forum for debate on the social and political significance of digital culture and on the ethical and aesthetic implications of cultural and communication processes mediated by digital technologies. To that end, it calls upon the participation of all experts and researchers that, at the intersection between the various social sciences and humanities, are developing empirical research and theoretical discussion about digital culture in its various expressions and features.
