Huawei or the American way? Why Brazil and South Africa did not securitize 5G

The visiting researcher at CES presents his research in the field of Political Science and International Relations, seeking to explain why the Chinese threat in 5G is seen differently in Europe's “Global South” and compares the different responses that South Africa and Brazil have given to the technological war between the USA and China.

Bio note

Janis van der Westhuizen is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa and researcher at the BRICS Policy Centre. He is a master in Political Science from the University of Stellenbosch and also Ph.D. in Political Science from Dalhousie University, Canada. He has been a visiting fellow in several institutions, including the (Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali "Guido Carli"), in Rome, and the Institute of Social and Political Studies of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, among many others. He has been awarded several research projects and has published extensively on topics such as South African foreign policy; the political economy of globalisation or Comparing Brazil and South Africa as rising powers.
