Seminar
Working in prisons: dilemmas and challenges for public policy
November 27, 2025, 14h30-17h00 (GMT)
Online event
The challenges of daily work in prisons and the risks associated with it have been increasingly recognised in various studies, international reports, and even in some public policies. The physical characteristics of prisons, their organisation and operating methods, overcrowding in certain establishments, shift work, potential exposure to hostility from inmates, as well as the perception of a lack of institutional and social recognition, all contribute to prison work being experienced as particularly demanding, emotionally draining, and generating high levels of stress.
Based on two empirical studies on professional practice in prisons, one conducted in Brazil and the other in Portugal, this seminar seeks to promote reflection on the challenges that these conditions pose to the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies. The aim is to discuss possible perspectives and responses within the framework of public policies, particularly in the areas of health, safety and well-being at work, contributing to a more consistent inclusion of working conditions in prisons on the political and institutional agenda.
