Seminar

Policies on bisexuality in Italy: between tensions and resistance

Aurelio Castro (Ativista bi+ / Investigação)

November 2, 2026, 14h30 (GMT)

Online event

With this seminar, we aim to shed light on bisexual contributions within the specific context of the Italian activist and academic landscape, through a conversation with Aurelio Castro, an Italian researcher whose anthology Politiche sulle bisessualità: Oltre la visibilità delle persone bisessuali, pansessuali e queer (2023, Edizioni ETS) inspired the title of this session. It will be an opportunity to broaden our understanding of bi+ lives and struggles in Southern Europe, with a focus on the situation in Italy - one of the countries in this region most affected by the wave of conservatism that has been growing since the Meloni government took office in 2022, and which continues to jeopardise the civil rights won by the Italian LGBTAIQ+ community.

Moderator: Mafalda Esteves (CES)

The event will be conducted in English.

Bio note

Aurelio Castro is a bi+ activist and conducts research into the psychosocial and political dimensions of bisexualities. In 2017, he co-organised Italy’s first bi+ pride march, Bi Visibility Day Padova. In 2020, he completed his PhD in Social Sciences at the University of Padua, with a thesis on the narratives and masculinities of bi+ and heterosexual men. In addition to writing and engaging in bisexual politics, he has co-organised international conferences with the International Bisexual Research Group since 2021 and, since 2024, has served as Outreach Coordinator for the Bisexual Issues Committee of Division 44 of the American Psychological Association. For ETS Edizioni, he edited the anthology Politics of Bisexuality: Beyond the Visibility of Bisexual, Pansexual, and Queer People.
