Rui Aristides Lebre


Biography

Rui Aristides Lebre is an architect, as well as an historian of architecture and urban planning. He holds a PhD in architecture and urban culture from the University of Coimbra (2017), where he is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture since 2017, teaching Design practice, History of Architecture and Research Seminars, as well as tutoring master dissertations and PhD candidates. His research addresses the entanglements between space, power and culture, with a focus on Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, and Mozambique. He was an invited researcher at Berkeley's College of Environmental Design in 2014, California, EUA. His research was recently (2019) awarded the Jeffrey Cook Award of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE). He recently finished a post-doctoral research on postcolonial architecture history and theory, at the Center for Social Studies (2018-2021), where he is currently Collaborator Researcher and Co-Principal investigator (Co-PI) of the funded research project "Regulating the Colonial Rural: Wartime Villagization in Late Portuguese Colonialism". Since 2015 he is a founding member of the Til Collective, exploring the role of commoning space through experimental and circular design, as well as exploring public pedagogy through architecture.
