«Outlasting – Living Archives of Older Queers» by Ana Cristina Santos & Nuno Barbosa
November 26, 2026, 18h00
Laginha Auditorium, Building 1, ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon
Drawing on the life stories of older LGBTQI+ people, Outlasting – Living Archives of Older Queers invites reflection on queer ageing and on the importance of preserving and valuing experiences that contribute to building a collective memory of sexual and gender diversity.
Produced as part of the project TRACE – Tracing Queer Citizenship Over Time, coordinated by Ana Cristina Santos at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), the documentary brings together testimonies from LGBTQI+ people over the age of 60 in five Southern European countries: Portugal, Italy, Greece, Malta, and Slovenia. Through these testimonies, the documentary sheds light on life journeys shaped by different forms of oppression, as well as by the affirmation of queer citizenship. In doing so, it contributes to the recognition of experiences that are often invisibilised in discussions around ageing as well as sexual and gender diversity.
The programme includes a screening of Outlasting – Living Archives of Older Queers, followed by a conversation with Ana Cristina Santos, moderated by the Coordination of the Thematic Section on Sexuality and Gender of the Portuguese Sociological Association.
The event is co-organised by the TRACE project, run by the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra (CES-UC), and by the Thematic Section on Sexuality and Gender of the Portuguese Sociological Association, in collaboration with the Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies of Gender and Sexuality (ISCTE), the Master’s in Women’s Studies: Gender, Citizenship and Development (Universidade Aberta) and the Master’s in Women’s Studies. Women in Society and Culture. (NOVA FCSH).
Outlasting – Living Archives of Older Queers was directed by Ana Cristina Santos and Nuno Barbosa as part of the TRACE project – Tracing Queer Citizenship Over Time: Ageing, Ageism and Age-Related LGBTI+ Politics in Europe, funded by the European Research Council (ERC-2021-COG, TRACE, GA No. 101044915).
