International Conference

Memories and Legacies of Liberation Struggles

September 27 to 29, 2018

Bissau (Guinea-Bissau)

Framework

September 24, 2018, marks the 45th anniversary of the independence of Guinea Bissau. To celebrate this occasion, the Amílcar Cabral Centre for Social Studies (CESAC), the National Institute of Studies and Research (INEP) and the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra through the CROME project (CES-UC/CROME) come together to promote an international colloquium dedicated to the memories and legacies of liberation struggles.

Recognising that the specific circumstances of the guerrilla strategy and the unfolding of the liberation war in Guinea-Bissau were decisive for the end of the dictatorship in Portugal and thus impacting the different contexts of anti-colonial struggle, the organising committee will choose presentations with a particular focus in the armed struggle unleashed in Guinea-Bissau, privileging the analysis of the processes of national, transnational and international memorisation that gave rise to them.

Thus, researchers should proposed contributions on the following themes:

- Cross memories of liberation struggles: anticolonialism, decolonisation and transition to independence
- Memory Materialisations. The symbolic spaces of the liberation struggle in memorials, monuments and museums
- Archives of the struggle: between History, Memory
- Agents of struggle, builders of the Nation: the different actors of national liberation
- Singing and telling the liberation struggle: culture, politics and testimony
