Memory and postmemory practices of Afro-Colombian youth in the urban Pacific

Supervisor/s: Marisa Ramos Gonçalves

Doctoral Programme: Post-Colonialisms and Global Citizenship

This project seeks to understand what it means to be young, to be born in a context of war and at the crossroads of multiple historical exclusions, considering the narratives of memory and post-memory of Afro-Colombian youth in the city of Quibdó, framed in the current Colombian context of uncertain transition towards the post-agreement. In the midst of daily situations of violence and war, but also of social, creative and constructive initiatives, the collaborative research focuses on three collectives of Afro-Colombian youth in Chocó. Youth is understood as a historical and cultural construction traversed by dimensions of gender, ethnicity, race, class and territoriality. Based on the active role of young people in their daily lives, their memory and post-memory practices related to war and urban violence, the work contributes to clarify continuities and connections between several exclusions that transcend the current Colombian armed conflict, and that need to be addressed in depth to collectively imagine more inclusive and just future alternatives.
