Abstract
The use of the plural in the title of this book, Patrimónios de Influência Portuguesa: modos de olhar [Heritages of Portuguese Influence: ways of looking], aims to raise a plurality of views on an object resulting from the composition of many others. It is, so to say, the proclamation of a multidimensional principle: not a single heritage from one origin, agent or group that, once examined, will perpetually offer the same answers. Everything depends on the context of the viewpoint, and the Portuguese influence is the common operator that, resorting to history, will organize and discipline the limits, albeit without circumscribing them. Influence in different fields and levels of interculturality: formal and informal, administrative or spiritual, commercial or migrational, colonial and post-colonial.
Here's how, very succinctly, the contemporary challenge of heritage presents two basic challenges: the recognition of otherness within a wider community and sustainable development. In the context of the project whose axis is the Doctoral Programme Heritages of Portuguese Influence, and all that has been set up around it, this is the foundation material and inspiration
