UNMSM (Peru) and UFPE/UFRPE (Brazil) distinguish Boaventura de Sousa Santos with Honorary Degree

Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) [Lima, Peru] distinguished Boaventura de Sousa Santos with the title of honorary doctor. The awarding ceremony will take place on December 1, 2019, when Boaventura de Sousa Santos will adress the inaugural conference of the XXXII International Congress ALAS Peru 2019, Las epistemologías del sur y las nuevas disyunciones entre procesos políticos y procesos civilizatorios.

Similarly, the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) [Brazil] jointly attribute a similar distinction to Boaventura de Sousa Santos due to «his undeniable contribution to science, humanities, arts and culture in general, in Brazil and Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia, particularly in India. In addition to numerous awards and honours in various parts of the world.» The joint award ceremony of the honoris causa title takes place on December 13, 2019, at the auditorium of the Faculty of Law in Recife.

The two honorary distinctions now attributed to this scholar add to those already conferred by McGill University (Canada), University of Brasilia, Federal University of Mato Grosso, Federal University of Sergipe, Federal University of Ouro Preto, La Salle University, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and Federal University/Catholic University of Pelotas, Maranhão State University (Brazil), Cordoba University and La Plata University (Argentina), Iberoamerican University (Mexico), Corunna University (Spain), Roskilde University (Denmark), National University of Rosario (Argentina) and University of Costa Rica (Costa Rica).

Boaventura de Sousa Santos is Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Coimbra (Portugal), and Distinguished Legal Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is Director Emeritus of the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra. He earned an LL.M and J.S.D. from Yale University and holds the Degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, by McGill University. His most recent project - ALICE: Leading Europe to a New Way of Sharing the World Experiences - was funded by an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC), one of the most prestigious and highly competitive international financial institutes for scientific excellence in Europe (http://alice.ces.uc.pt/en/). He has written and published widely on the issues of globalization, sociology of law and the state, epistemology, social movements and the World Social Forum in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian, French, German, Chinese, Danish, Romanian and Polish.
