Final Colloquium of the UnCoveR project
Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape
June 23 and 24, 2026
Room 1, CES | Alta
This colloquium marks the conclusion of UnCoveR ‘Sexual Violence in Portuguese Mediascape’, the first comprehensive transdisciplinary study of sexual violence in the 21st-century Portuguese media landscape. Using a critical feminist, intersectional and methodologically plural approach, the project identified, mapped and analysed the representations, narratives and imaginaries of sexual violence in the Portuguese news media between 2011 and 2023. The following research questions served as a starting point: How was sexual violence reported, discussed and imagined in the Portuguese media during the period under analysis? What imaginaries do media representations activate, reflect, reproduce and perpetuate? Why were these representations produced? In what ways did audiences reproduce, challenge or appropriate the media representations and narratives?
UnCoveR was structured around three main areas of analysis: media messages, media content producers and audiences. By combining the analysis of journalistic texts - both written and audiovisual - with the results of in-depth interviews with journalists and focus groups with audiences, the project developed an integrated understanding of the regimes of representation, normative dynamics, and the power and counter-power relations that structure the production, circulation and reception of news about sexual violence.
The colloquium will be attended by the team, who will discuss various case studies and present the main findings of the research. A number of consultants involved in the project will also be in attendance.
The working language for the first day of the colloquium is English, and for the second day it is Portuguese.
