COMCHA International Symposium

Community-based change: local and traditional knowledge(s) in NbS

May 26, 2026

Manoel Vereza Auditorium, Federal University of Espírito Santo (Brazil)

This international symposium is part of the I COmCHA Live Consortium Meeting. COmCHA is an international project funded by Biodiversa+, the European Partnership for Biodiversity, and co-funded by the European Comission, and national research funding agencies. It gathers 12 academic institutions from Brazil and Europe for producing evidence on 18 cases of nature-based solutions in threatened territories, namely urban, rural and indigenous areas, as well as isolated islands.

The symposium is hosted by the COmCHA's partner Federal Institute of Espírito Santo (IFES) and is organised by IFES, Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), and CES, the consortium leader.  It has the goal of discussing scientific contributions between Brazil and Europe regarding the NbS agenda, emphasing the relevance of a intercultural translation between the different contexts, as well as between conventional and community-based NbS.

During the event, some issues that are relevant for a more inclusive design and implementation of NbS projects will be discussed such as: a challenging approach for transformative change, the relevance of knowledge co-production, translation between different contexts, and the role played by the community-based communication for boosting community-based change.

In the afternoon, cases in Espírito Santo will be presented in the sense of demonstrating how a popular-based solution can foster social and environmental justice in threatened territories.

COmCHA Project is co-funded by the European Commission (GA No. 101052342) and the following funding organisations: Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Portugal); Icelandic Centre for Research (RANNÍS, Iceland); Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq, Brazil); Brazilian National Council of State Funding Agencies (CONFAP, Brazil); Araucaria Foundation (Paraná State, Brazil); Spanish State Research Agency (AEI, Spain); Fundación Biodiversidad (Spain); Regional Science and Technology Fund (FRCT, Azores, Portugal); Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR, Italy); Espírito Santo Research and Innovation Support Foundation (FAPES, Brazil); Research Support Foundation of the State of Bahia (FAPESB, Brazil); Rio Grande do Sul State Research Support Foundation (FAPERGS, Brazil); Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ, Brazil); São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP, Brazil); National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH, Hungary).
