his one-day in-person meeting in Lisbon is intended to discuss the findings of the research project ‘Rural Decolonisation: The Portuguese Revolution and the Liberation of Villagization Camps in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau, 1974-75, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) [DOI: https://doi.org/10.54499/2023.10619.25ABR] as part of the mission of the 50th Anniversary of 25 April Commemorative Commission. The project aimed to contribute to an understanding of the lived experience of decolonisation in rural areas of Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau, during the period between the 25 April military coup and the political independence of the three countries in 1974 and 1975. In particular, the project focused on the spatial experience of the liberation of the 2 million peasants living under military settlement conditions in the three countries, including transformations in the built environment as well as in the social sphere.
This event begins with a look back at the inspiring work of the project’s consultant, Isabel Raposo, on the communal villages of Manica, Mozambique, carried out in the early 1990s. In the afternoon, the research team will present the findings from their fieldwork. The event concludes with the launch of the graphic novel *Aldeamentos de Guerra* by Francisco Sousa Lobo, based on interviews conducted by the project team. The artist and the project’s consultants will then reflect on the project and the avenues for future research into rural urbanism in regions where resettlement schemes once existed.
