Initiatives to combat food waste in Portugal - Andrés Spognardi (CES)

Summary:
Over the past decade, increasing economic inequalities and growing concern over issues such as climate change and energy security have increased scrutiny of the social and environmental sustainability of the food production and consumption system. In Portugal, a variety of actors, mainly from the social and solidarity economy, have been developing an increasing number of initiatives aimed at redistributing and/or reselling part of the food surplus. This presentation describes these experiences and discusses the role of these actors as agents of local and national public policy development.

Knowledges and flavours in the community of practice of the URBiNAT project - Gonçalo Canto Moniz and Nathalie Nunes (CES)

Summary:
The URBiNAT project, funded by the European Union, aims to co-create nature-inspired solutions for the urban regeneration of social housing areas in seven European cities. The consortium brings together 28 partners in 15 countries (European and from other continents), including municipalities and local authorities, businesses, technological institutions and research centres, in order to develop healthy corridors in the public space with the population and stakeholders in their areas of intervention. In the first half of its 5 years of implementation, the project has promoted the establishment of living laboratories in their cities, in which technicians, academics and citizens have shared their knowledge, namely in the co-creation of innovative solutions based on nature. An example of this is the exchange of experiences, between partners from different cities, regarding the implementation of community gardens, sensory gardens, solidarity markets of local producers or even community kitchens. The aim of this seminar is to share some experiences, challenges and opportunities of this community of practice and interests.

Home Gardens and Food Sovereignty: Urban Experiences in times of COVID in Mozambique - Boaventura Monjane (PhD in Postcolonialisms and Global Citizenship, CES/UC - Defense to be held. Post-doctoral researcher in Agrarian Studies, PLAAS, University of the Western Cape)

Summary:
The decree and implementation of the State of Emergency in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mozambique has triggered a movement that, although not new in the context of the city of Maputo, illuminates new reflections on the role of urban agriculture in building food sovereignty. This contribution aims to look at and analyse the experiences of home gardens, especially among the 'middle' class youth workers, which spread a little over Maputo and Matola during the months when the State of Emergency was in force in Mozambique.
