About

This seminar is part of the series The Weft of Memory: dates to count, organised by the coordination of the thematic line Europe and the Global South: heritages and dialogues. The series aims to mark and reflect on less resounding dates, but equally determinant for the construction of the 25th of April 1974 and the independence of Portuguese-speaking African countries and East Timor. The seminars take place online, whenever possible on the date to be marked, every month, at 16h00, throughout 2023.

The Editora Afrontamento publishing house, founded in the late 1960s, was an important space for the publication of works that were crucial in the denunciation of the dictatorship and the Portuguese colonial issue, of which stands out Brochado Coelho's publication of Joaquim Pinto de Andrade´s trial documents, giving rise to the work "In defence of Joaquim Pinto de Andrade", in July 1971. Based on the testimony of José Sousa Ribeiro, director of Edições Afrontamento, we can listen and reflect on these important editorial gestures, on the published works and their impact, in a conversation moderated by Miguel Cardina.
