URGE
Cultivating Equality: Rural Women, Food Systems and Agroecology in the Iberian Peninsula
The URGE project examines the perspectives, agroecological practices and demands of rural women involved in family farming in Portugal, Galicia and the Basque Country. Drawing on a gender perspective and participatory feminist methodologies, this comparative project seeks to amplify rural women’s voices and strengthen their role in shaping more sustainable, equitable and inclusive food policies and food systems.
The project has three main objectives:
To identify the factors that facilitate or hinder women’s participation in agriculture and explore their priorities for more sustainable and inclusive agri-food policies, with particular emphasis on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP);
To document and analyse rural women’s struggles and demands, past and present, at local, national, regional and European levels;
To highlight rural women’s contributions to the development, maintenance and dissemination of sustainable, just and inclusive food systems.
To achieve these objectives, URGE will:
a) Co-create research agendas with rural women through Local Research Planning Workshops in each territory;
b) Organise an Agroecological Caravan to foster dialogue and knowledge exchange among women and other relevant stakeholders;
c) Conduct oral history interviews to document women’s experiences and struggles relating to agriculture, food and gender issues;
d) Develop case studies focusing on rural women’s agroecological practices in the participating territories.
