About

"What Education?" it is one of the 11 “What” in which the research «(EU)ROPA - Rise of Portuguese Architecture» is structured, a multifaceted, retrospective and prospective reading of Portuguese architecture.

This line of research aims to explore the sedimentation of a culture of teaching architecture in Portugal between 1966 and 2016, mapping the reaction of architecture schools to the main political and cultural events. Throughout this period, not only have the schools in Porto and Lisbon been transformed, but new courses in architecture have also been created, with alternative pedagogical programmes, to respond to the progressive integration of architecture in the university system. In fact, in these 50 years, the great challenge for the education of the Architect has been the paradigm shift from the fine arts system to the university system, with the integration of social sciences and technologies, in a field dominated by the arts.

This online event brings together researchers from the (EU)ROPA project and guest researchers from the “What Education” line, with the aim of publicly discussing the first results of the research. It intends to identify, for each case study, the most relevant themes and the key moments of the training of the architect. At the same time, the challenges brought to this context by research will be placed, in line with the developments in the “What Research” line.
