About

In this training session we will present the work and scientific contributions of the Herbarium and discuss the impacts of urban biodiversity and urban green spaces on human health and well-being. We will also explore the pedagogical potential of the collaborative platform "Explorator", developed by the Herbarium within the scope of a Master's thesis project.

The training is part of the initiative "Crossed knowledges: knowing, remembering, imagining and learning in the city", which was born from the will to value cities as living libraries, where different knowledges cross: knowledges from science, from experience, from living, from imagination. Libraries with multiple stories that must also be recognised as a valuable educational resource.

The aim is that cities - and outdoor spaces - may become a stage for multiple learning, and for meetings between the university and schools and kindergartens.

Contents: botany and the study of vegetation; management, computerization and availability of botanical information; modern herbarium methods and techniques; biological collections and scientific data; biodiversity; urban biodiversity; urban green spaces; science and art; creativity and critical reflection; action-research; production and circulation of knowledge; co-production of knowledge; active learning; context-based learning; citizen science and education.

Methodology: Following the spirit of "crossed knowledges", we intend to create a space for dialogue between the results of recent research projects of teachers and researchers of the University of Coimbra and the scientific and pedagogical knowledge of educators and teachers from pre-school to secondary school. Thus, the methodology adopted foresees oral presentations, debates and "hands-on" activities.

Trainers: Fátima Sales, Joaquim Santos and Filipe Covelo (CFE, COI), Maria Jorge Ferro (FPCEUC), Jorge Cabrera (DArq, CAPC), Rita Campos (CES-UC)

Target-audience: Primary and secondary school teachers and kindergarten educators
